Uganda Parliament Outlaws Female Genital Mutilation

In a unanimous vote Friday, Uganda’s Parliament outlawed female genital mutilation.  The new law imposes a 10-year prison sentence upon anyone who performs the act, and life in prison on anyone who forces a woman to submit to the act.  Female genital mutilation is not widespread in Uganda, but it has historically been practiced in some communities in Northeast Uganda.
