The Terrible State of [North] Korean Medical Care

One million people in North Korea, or five percent of the population, suffer from tuberculosis, a disease North Koreans refer to as “the poor man’s disease.” Many North Korean patients are suffering from illnesses that can be cured simply with medicine to which they do not have access. After the collapse of the warsaw pact, shipments of pharmaceutical supplies all but stopped. Today, doctors grow their own cotton for bandages. Chosun Ilbo columnist Kim Dong-seop writes an overview of the state of medical care in North Korea.
