SOUTH AFRICA: Improved PMTCT Yields Dramatic Results

Mother-to-child transmission of HIV has dropped by almost two-thirds in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province. The drop has been attributed to the use of dual antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, during which HIV positive pregnant mothers are given  a single dose of nevirapine and begin ARV therapy at 28 weeks of pregnancy. These mothers’ babies received ARV treatment for seven days after birth, as well as their own dose of nevirapine.
