Models of Public-Private Partnerships in Africa: Identifying What Works
May 19th, 2010 | Global Health Progress
Wednesday, May 19 – Global Health Progress (GHP) and the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) hosted a luncheon discussion on the margins of the 63rd World Health Assembly for Ministers, Ambassadors and senior health officials from Africa. The discussion highlighted proven, and effective models of public-private partnerships, and their potential to meet the diverse health challenges being faced in Africa.
Featured speakers at the luncheon included Dr. Sam Zaramba, former Director-General of Health Services of Uganda and outgoing chair of the WHO Executive Board, Mr. Andy Wilson, Vice President of the Abbott Fund Tanzania, Ms. Phangisile Mtshali, Director of the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, and Eduardo Pisani, Director General, IFPMA. Given the enormity of the health challenges being faced in Africa, no country is going to be able to meet them alone. There are unique advantages to be gained from public-private partnerships, whether they are lead by government, civil society, or the private sector, and as these partnership models become more common, interest is increasing, especially in Africa, in understanding how different successful models have been implemented, and how features can be replicated.
Over 90 leaders in health, including Ministers of Health from Cameroon, the Gambia, Haiti, Mozambique, Niger and Swaziland attended the lunch. Senior delegates from 16 countries and the African Union were also in attendance including officials from Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Eritrea, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
