Global Health Progress Congratulates Best Practices in Global Health Award Recipient

Washington, DC – May 27, 2009 – Global Health Progress joins the Global Health Council in congratulating Dr. Harshad Sanghvi, vice president and medical director of Jhpiego, for winning the 2009 Best Practices in Global Health Award for his work to address the issue of postpartum hemorrhaging (PPH).  The award is given annually by the Global Health Council to highlight innovative and successful approaches to improving health in the developing world.

“For more than 25 years, Dr. Sanghvi has worked to alleviate the toll this condition takes on mothers, their families and communities,” said Chris Singer, President, International, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), a founding member of the Global Health Progress initiative, which is sponsoring this year’s Best Practices in Global Health Award. “His work exemplifies the spirit of sustainability, innovation and partnership that makes a lasting impact on global health.”

Dr. Sanghvi, an obstetrics-gynecology physician from Kenya, is internationally recognized for his expertise on the issue of PPH, serving on committees for the United States Government, the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the International College of Midwives. He is a strong advocate for the use of misprostol, an ulcer treatment, to prevent PPH during home birth. Through Dr. Sanghvi’s leadership, Jhpiego now collaborates with other partners to assist developing nations in community-based distribution of misoprostol.

Dr. Sanghvi will receive the award at a May 28 banquet during the Global Health Council’s 36th Annual International Conference on Global Health in Washington, DC.  Learn more about the conference and the Global Health Council >>
