Five Questions for Nils Daulaire, President and CEO, Global Health Council

The Council is an advocacy and research group representing international health organizations in Washington, and Daulaire is stepping down early in the new year after 10 years at the helm. He has been widely mentioned as a candidate to run the U.S. Agency for International Development in the Obama administration. He says that, despite the international financial crisis, the time is ripe to expand U.S. international development assistance.

Q. In light of the economy, what’s your best argument for boosting U.S. spending to improve global health? A. Even if Congress cut all foreign assistance, it would have no effect in terms of the deficit, and it would have a huge effect on American credibility and reputation abroad and also a huge effect in terms of making the world a more dangerous place.
