Families of seafarers exposed to high risks of HIV

An estimated 1.7 million women in Asia are currently living with HIV/AIDS.  A recently released study by UNAIDS estimates that 90 percent of these women were infected by their long-term partners.

In the Philippines, returning overseas contract workers have emerged as a major source of HIV infection.  According to the Philippines National AIDS Council, seafarers made up 35 percent of new HIV infection cases in the country in 2008.  About 90 percent of HIV positive Filipinos were infected via sexual contact.   In response, programs to target spousal HIV infection in the Philippines are under evaluation.
