Britain’s Medical Research Council announced Monday that the vaginal gel, made by U.S. drug firm Endo Pharmaceuticals and designed to prevent infection with the AIDS virus, has proved ineffective in trials in Africa. The vaginal microbicide was tested in more than 9,000 women in four African countries. No evidence was found to suggest that use of the gel reduced these women’s risk of HIV infection.
